What is the best emulator for psp ?
Have you ever dreamt of playing your psp games on your computer? Or do you want to try the last demo you downloaded from Internet on your pc? You can do both by using a PSP emulator on your computer. An emulator is a program that will read the psp games and enable you to play them on your wide screen computer.
The emulation of a video game system is not too difficult for old consoles but the last video game platforms have complex instructions and the emulation is way more tricky. As of today psp emulators are not yet perfect. Most of them are buggy and some games won’t even show up.
Currently there are 2 projects that are the most advanced and will allow you to play your iso games. We will try to review and find the best emulator for psp in this article.
The first emulator on the scene is called Potemkin. This emulator was released during mid 2007 and has been elected as the best psp emulator by many gamers. However the author of this emulator has stopped the development of this software so it is still considered as experimental. The code has been released and some teams are working on it, a new project based on the Potemkin code will be released soon and will run on every platforms as it is a java based program.
Potemkin emulates the PSP kernel and allow to play 2 dimensions games like Puzzle Bubble or Puyo Puyo. It is still not possible to display the 3D graphics with this emulator as the VFPU emulation is still not implemented. Indeed the 3D engine is the most complex part to emulate and would require a lot of work from the developers. You can still use it for demo purposes and see by yourself which games work and which don’t.
You can see a demo of Potemkin in this video:
The second most used emulator and the most recent one is called PSPE. PSPE allow you to play some demos and homebrew applications but the iso games won’t work for the moment. It is still useful as you can try out your demo without to plug in your psp and moreover you can enjoy playing on a big screen.
You can see a demo of pspe in this video:
PSPE is still under development and we can hope that one day it will allow us to play commercial games on pc.
Both emulator have poor and cons. It is better to try them and see what is working on each one.
Finally we should always monitor the emulation scene as some new emulators are popping up every month or so. The last emulator that seems to support the 3D engine is called psp player and many people hope that in a near future more games will be supported. Actually a few games are working on this last emulator but the good news is that the 3D is now supported by this software. Hopefully it would be one day the best emulator for psp.
